Something about me and my personal thoughts about educating your kids
My name is Richard Low. I was born in Singapore, migrated to Sydney during my teens, and after high school returned to Singapore to complete my mandatory military service and university. I continued to work in Singapore and in 2008, moved back to Sydney. Along the way, i met my wife and partner, Wendy, and we have 2 beautiful children, Kayla and Kieran. Till date, marrying my wife and having my 2 kids, have been my greatest achievements :)
One of my childhood dreams was to be a journalist. Well, i guess this blog helps me to partly achieve that :)
What i believe in!
Explore and Learn! Be Passionate!
I am a strong believer of PASSION. Love what you do and you will excel. When it comes to my kids, i want them to love learning and search for their PASSION.
Don't Pressure! Engage with your kids!
I'm against pressuring your kids! Let them take the time to explore and have fun. I still remember the days when my mum would read stories to me and spend time explaining stuff. Alot of my personal development can be attributed to her hard work!
Don't follow the crowd! Have confidence in yourself and your kids!
When i was living in Singapore, there was plenty of peer pressure as a parent. Many parents would be queuing up to put their kids through endless enrichment classes to help with reading, math, or science. Once again, the best enrichment class is the one where you are INVOLVED. I wouldn't want to leave it entirely to someone else. Would that person care as much for your child? I seriously doubt it.
Crowding out your kid's timetable is another NO NO for me. They need time to play and spend time with their family and friends. This is the period in their lives where they aren't faced with responsibilities and commitments. Don't take it away from them.
Finally, don't follow the crowd. Every child is different and it is importnat toconfidence in them. While classes may be good, i feel it sometimes sends the wrong message to a child that he/she needs a class/school/lesson to know something.
